There are several different types of materials and methods of making carpet - this affects quality and price. Tufted Carpet Now days most common method of carpet construction. Hundreds of needles thread the yarn through a light weight backing, forming loops of tufts to the required length. An adhesive coating and a second jute backing are applied to anchor tufts into position and for strength. Woven Carpet Originally most carpets were woven on a loom. Wool / Nylon Nylon is often blended with wool to increase abrasion resistance, especially for lighter weight carpets. A common blend is 80% wool, 20% nylon. This ratio retains all the major properties of a pure wool carpet at a more economical price.
Acrylic & Polypropylene Mainly a budget type of carpet that resembles wool in feel and appearance, but may not have the appearance retention of wool or nylon. Level Loop Pile Consists of loops the same height, left uncut. Most level loop carpets wear well and tracking or crushing is minimized. Soil tends to stay on the surface making them easy to clean.
Multi Level Loop Carpet is constructed of different height loops creating a patterned surface. This type of carpet hides dust and dirt better than level loop, but is not quite as wear resistant.
Cut Pile These carpets have the loop cut off so that each loop has two strands which stand upright. Cut pile carpets have a stunning appearance, however can show shading and foot prints easily.
Cut & Loop Pile A combination of cut pile and loop pile yarns. The longer loops are cut and the shorter loops uncut creating a sculptured effect.
